Not what we expected.
My husband and I love to find ethinic and gourmet food shops when visiting other cities. On a recent visit to Milwaukee, we stopped in Peter Sciortino's Bakery on Brady Street -- a very disappointing experience. We especially love mom and pop bakeries as my my husband's grandfather owned a bakery business in Cincinnati for nearly 50 years.
Peter Sciortino's was advertised as an one of the best known Italian bakeries in Milwaukee but does not even bake ciabatta bread. Even though we arrived early, less than an hour after the bakery opened, the few loaves of bread on the shelf looked as if it they were baked by the local IGA grocery store, not an ethnic bakery.
Upon entering, we were hoping for the smell of fresh bread, but instead found the bakery to smell like an old donut shop. Although we planned to purchased cookies and cannolis to take home to our daughter, we left without purchasing anything as the older woman behind the counter was extremely rude and gave the impression that her customers were more of a bother than anything.
Service with an attitude.
Good cookies, though if I am charged $8.95 per pound or any price for that matter, I would expect that the sales lady who just gave the previous customer their change back not pick up each cookie that I choose with their bare hands.
That is ridiculous and I wish I had said something...
Their salespeople have a tendancy to cop an attitude like they're doing you (the customer) a favor..
Not planning on going back..can only imagine what happens if a cookie is dropped...does it get placed back on the shelf?
Best Pastries EVER!.
When I lived in Madison, I used to plan trips to Milwaukee so I could visit Brady Street for this bakery and a side trip to Glorioso's deli. Their bread is perfect - crusty outside, tender inside. They have these wonderful lemon pastries that are made with hundreds of layers of flaky layers of phyllo dough and a lemon creme.
I've never experienced poor service - it's a popular place, and the staff is busy, but I've always been treated promptly and personably by their staff.
Over rated place. After reading the two reader reviews, I would have to side more with the first guy. The second reader review guy needs to get up to that place in Menomonee Falls and check out better bread, better prices, and last but not least, people that wait on you that don't act like their doing you a favor!
bakerman. after having lived in many italian city's, and worked in bakeries, i would have to say that sciortino's has top quality product, and the people there know quality. i must add i was also every pleased with the sevice even though the store was gammed pack with loyal customers. great product, every clean!!! keep up the good work.
Sweet cream-filled cannoli is a favorite at this long-standing Brady Street bakeshop..
In Short
One of the best-known Italian joints in all of Milwaukee is a bakery. Peter Sciortino's has been serving up fresh-baked goods to Eastside patrons for decades. This tiny corner bakery smells up the block every morning with an irresistible aroma that entices crowds of early risers to get in line for delicious, fresh-from-the-oven favorites. Everything tastes as good as it looks. Regulars swear this is the best place in town for cannoli and hard rolls.
