I just dined at Mimma's last night for the first time and have to admit it was a little less than what I had expected from reading reviews online. I'm new to Milwaukee and had been dying to try it.
I want to cut them a little bit of slack because it was Valentine's Day and most restaurants can expect to be very busy. But when we checked in for our reservation we were told they were at least 30 minutes behind. The hostess did not even apologize; she just simply said "get comfortable, it's going to be a while"
I worked in the food service industry for five years as a hostess, server and bartender. The establishments I worked for always viewed statistical data from popular days to dine out such as Valentine's Day and planned accordingly for reservations and staffing. I can't imagine that Mimma’s hasn't done several busy Valentine's Days in the past had d so I'm not sure what the issue was.
I noticed that although we had to wait, along with many other diners at the bar, they had several open tables in the dining room which leads me to believe they were understaffed that evening.
When we were finally seated, our server was extremely friendly and was trying hard, but I think her section was probably too big to provide really good service. She did recommend a really nice bottle of wine that we enjoyed and went over the special menu for Valentine’s Day. We ordered two appetizers that were both very good. But our entrees left a little bit to be desired.
My date and I both ordered specials off the Valentine's Day menu and we probably should have stuck with pasta off their regular menu. We ordered a beef tenderloin dish and seafood scampi, both were not that great especially considering the price point.
Overall, it was just an average meal, I would maybe go back but would probably keep it really simple and only order the pastas from their regular menu.
Wonderful, Fantastic, delicous. I must tell everyone that Mimma's is an experience in dinning that you will never forget. The food is incredible. The service is second to none. Attention to detail. The enviroment is absolutely charming. Not a spec of dirt in any corner.
NEEDS SO MUCH HELP!!!. I WORKED FOR MMMA'S & I CAN PERSONALLY SAY, HAVING WORK AROUND THE WORLD THE FOOD IS O.K. BUT THE OWNER IS SELFISH & HAS NO IDEA AS TO WHAT SHE'S DOING. I WAS A PASTRY CHEF BROUGHT IN TO HELP THIS BUSNESS WHICH IS TO LATE FOR HELP. THE CHEF STAYS WITH HER OUT OF SIMPATHY. THE FOOD IS OVER PRICE BECAUSE SHE'S $3,000,000.00 IN THE WHOLE. THE DESSERTS I DID I BROUGHT STARIGHT FROM ITALY AND THERE STILL WAS NO APPRECIATION FOR WHAT I DID. THEY ALSO DON'T APPRECIATE THEY'RE CUSTOMERS. THE DESSERT COME FROM SIMMA'S BAKER WHICH ARE STILL LOW QUALITY. YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF TAKING THE TIME TO GO TO CHICAGO FOR A FIVE STAR MEAL.
AAA+. Went to Mimma's Café again – party of six – had an excellent table, waiter was very polite and really did not bother us too much, we had the table for two+ hours with no complaints from the waiter and we were able to have conversation without having him up in our bznz. Or pushing us to leave; he was great! Gave him a $60.00 tip! Food again was excellent – took my folks there for the first time and they really enjoyed the atmosphere. It is a great place for family or a romantic evening for two; I again totally recommend this café!!
Overpriced and over rated.
I went to Mimma's with four other friends and the owner took us to the back area of the restaurant and pointed to our table and said that is where you sit. We walked ourselves BACK to our table which was on the far end of the room...she didn't!
My fellow dinners ordered wine and when it arrived the glasses were barely an inch full! The waiter was given way too much area to cover along with large groups of people. He forgot requests for refills and there was quite a wait between our appetizers and the main course.
The menu is impressive as it is written but the food is not. I have had better at other area establishments. Dessert was nothing to rave about either.
For five people with a couple of drinks and dessert our bill came to over $300.00 with tip. I have spent less money for better quality at Eddie Martini's in Wauwatosa.
That was my first and last trip to Mimma's.
best sicilian cuisine ouside of Sicily. Best sicilian restaurant I've been to, outside of Palermo. I've been at Mimma's many times, needless to say it is my favorite in Milwaukee and I always recommend it to all my friends. The food is extraordinary and the wine list will satisfy most wine aficionados, (check their selection of Grappa, is great!) and to save the best for the last, Mimma is a gem of a hostess.
Wonderful little find in Milwaukee.
Not having a clue on where to go to dinner on a Sunday night in Milwaukee, I read the Milwaukee Guide in my hotel room. I read about a number of restaurants, but still couldn't choose, so we got in the car and started driving around. We finally saw so many of the restaurants I'd read about, we decided to get out of the car and start walking the street. We checked out all the restaurants by eye and chose Mimma's Cafe. We were even lucky enough to get a table by the window overlooking the street and all the people out walking their pets and shopping...even on a Sunday evening.
Our waitress was wonderful and suggested we try the wine flight. A selection of 3 delicious wines. We had fun deciding which was our favorite. Our food was grand and was definitely authentic Italy...Mimma does the cooking. I had the Taglietelle alla Favorita, which was black pasta with scallops, shrimp, crab and sun-dried tomatoes with porcini cream sauce...out of this world. I couldn't possibly eat it all though since the portion was so large. And since I was on a business trip, I couldn't take the rest home with me.
We were so happy to have found Mimma's, and although there are so many great Italian restaurants out there, I think Mimma's will remain one of my favorites.
With a menu of Italian delights, this cafe was a catalyst in bringing Brady Street back to life..
More than a decade ago matriarch Mimma Megna opened a tiny storefront cafe. Now, after two expansions, this eatery has developed into one of the busiest restaurants in the city. Fifty different pastas will drive the indecisive crazy with an almost endless variety of shapes and sizes loaded with fresh meats and seafood. The tiramisu is first-rate. End the meal with a gelato from Mimma's nephew's machine.
They'll make you a dinner you can't refuse!.
Have enjoyed visiting Mimma's often as a great place for wine and dessert [not to mention the ONLY place for espresso in town]! The service is sometimes great and sometimes not-so. That said, I cannot think of a better fine Italian restaurant in the area.
I love their calamari fritte! I only wish they served more red meats.
Annoying service. The waitress was highly annoying as she was very blatant about trying to get us to add things to pad the bill. She suggested only higher-priced wines, etc. We had eaten here 4 years ago and loved it and this time it was rather disappointing. The wine list was extremely extensive but should contain more moderate priced selections. The menu has more variety than it needs to and can take a while to get through. Again, the waitress simply would not leave us alone long enough time to get through it all. My $18 seafood pasta came with tiny scallops and shrimp that tasted like they were frozen. There were larger shrimp in it as well that were tough, overcooked, and flavorless. My partner's pasta was sticky and his dish tasted fishy. I hate to say it but I don't think we'll be going back.
