The Scene
This could be a restaurant Billy Joel sings about--framed by a low ceiling and smoky. There are few frills outside of photographs of the Sicilian town of Porticello.
The Food
Savor the fine house wine and a loaf of flaky, fresh-baked bread. Dip it in the olive oil spiced with minced, fresh garlic, oregano and parsley. The chicken spiedini, a house specialty, is moist and flavorful--nicely accented with a side of pasta. The French fried eggplant is enough to share with your table. Shrimp, calamari and the seafood specials are outstanding--fresh and prepared delicately to ensure the flavor of the fish is enhanced rather than overpowered. For dessert, the tiramisu is light on the cream to allow the coffee flavor to dominate, while the cheesecake is sinfully creamy. Entrees are available in smaller servings at lunch when cheaper prices create one of the best values in town.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoJoey's has no non-smoking section and the bar smoke tends to waft into the restaurant.
Look GoodThe house wines are excellent and reasonably priced, with some interesting variations beyond the usual choices of red or white.
Save MoneyAppetizers don't give enough bang for the buck. Ask for a second loaf of bread and more dipping sauce instead.

I have been to Joey's many times & have enjoyed it every time until a recent thursday I went there. My friend & I walked in and it was so smoke filled, that it should have told us that it wasn't a good night to come in. There wasn't anyone in the dining room, so my friend and I chose a table. The waitress ran up to us to try to get us to change tables and because we didn't, was basically rude to us the rest of the night. The food here is awesome. They have the best dipping oil for the best bread. Their chicken pastini soup is excellent. I had their Pasta Carbonara that was excellent...even a few days later when I reheated it for lunch. Most of the times we came here we had the same waitress, a blonde woman who was so accomadating that I couldn't wait to come back. However this trip & this waitress will definately make me think twice before going again.
Pros: Excellent food, every time
Cons: Strong cigarette smell, recommended for smokers!!

It took us 2 1/2 hours to eat a wonderful dinner and the waitress didn't pester us a bit. We went because we had heard that the atmosphere was right for a long, conversation filled dinner. Service was adequate. I would not go there at dinner time if I were in a hurry, but we weren't. The food was well worth the moderate price. We truly enjoyed both the dinner and the atmosphere.
Pros: great value, comfortable atmospher, off the beaten path
Cons: off the beaten path
