Milwaukee's Art House Cinema. Where to go when Hollywood has you bored to tears? The Oriental of course! Independent and foreign films regularly make their only Wisconsin appearance here. The decor is original and gorgeous - red velvet, Buddhas, balconies and marble tile all make this theatre (despite it's division to accomodate 2 smaller screens) one of the most authentic in the area. And let's not forget the Midnight circuit - need your Rocky Horror fix? You know where to go...
Wonderful interiors, choice arty movies.
This is an out of the world theater, a cure for the faceless multiplex behemoths. The interiors are decorated with chandeliers, overlooking balconies (non functional), and sculpture pieces. I discerned a Buddhist influence with crouching lions and Buddha-sque carvings on the chandeliers. The lounge is laid out with a plush carpet and there are a few seats you can relax on if you reach early. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
I may be particularly biased since I saw a memorable movie there - Sideways.
Nostagic hipness. The Oriental takes you into an era of ornate historical elegance and comfort. The theatre surrounds you with historical architecture and design, restored to its original beauty. Enjoy the pipe organist before the main show and marvel as he sinks into the floor of the stage right before the show begins. No better place to view an IFC flick. Go for eats to the Apollo afterwards for delicious Greek food in a clean casual environment.
best in brewtown. for decades the Oriental has been the best and often only choice to see a quality film in milwaukee. the best selection (w/ its sister theatre, the downer) by far. great concessions. great decor. the only way to go.
