Editorial Review for The Packing House – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
Open since 1973, the Packing House is a classic restaurant where the hard-won blue ribbons from the Wisconsin State Fair are proudly displayed and demonstrate the owners' commitment to good steak.
The Food
Corn-fed beef tenderloin is the star of the show here. Whether you prefer your beef stuffed with slivers of fresh garlic, crusted with cracked peppercorns or topped with crab, asparagus and bearnaise sauce, you can't go wrong. Veal Marsala, barbecued ribs, shrimp scampi, chicken Parmesan and prime rib provide enough variety to keep the menu interesting. Toss in live entertainment and you'll discover why this is one of the south side's most popular restaurants.

A great deal and excellent steaks. Dinners are huge. I really prefer this setting over the downtown steak houses. Fine dining without pretentious crowd. Unfortunately I moved out of state and only get to stop here when visiting. Location is convenient via I-794, 894, or I-94, easy trip from downtown. Right across the street from the airport and Signature Flight Service (walk across the street). Quick drive from airport hotels or easy stop off of interstate at Layton Ave. exit, even if you're just passing through. I have gone both casual and dressed for supper. I always ask if I'm "attired properly", because I have eaten at the Packing House after days of flying I am sometimes in shorts/polo shirt. Staff assured me it was fine. Have eaten here several times and found it to be a great steak dinner and nice dining atmosphere. Very good service and nice staff which I find important. The word "Reasonable" should not indicate that it is anything less than an excellent experience, I just found it to be less expensive than I would have expected for a large steak dinner.
Pros: Very good experience several times
Cons: Can't think of any

Our family has been dining here since I was in high school (the 70's) This is the best dining establishment place Milwaukee has to offer. The chef's are the best, the food is top rate, the people are the friendliest Milwaukee has to offer. The prices are good, and you leave feeling like you just left your rich aunt's dinner table. Even if you come with a large group.
Pros: food, staff, ambiance
