LEON'S IS THE BEST. For the past 18 years, my mother and I have been eating at Leon's every weekend. The food gets better and better every day. NO other ice cream (Ben & Jerrys included) even comes close to comparing to Leon's. It has become a landmark in Milwaukee and I hope they never close!
longevity.
I am not sure when Leon's opened but I remember
going there in 1948. My future husband was in the
national guards and after I waited in the car for him
when he attended meetings. My reward was a stop at Leon's for a hot fudge sundae. I stopped there recently, and it was as good as ever. I challenge
anyone to name a restaurant that has lasted that long. Over fifty years Wow that says a lot.
Flash back to the '50s at this walk-up, south-side custard stand..
The Scene
The only details that have changed over six decades are the models of the cars crowding its parking lot from noon to early morning. A family spot and teen hangout, it's as friendly and accommodating as the '50s stands were--without car-hops.
The Food
Leon's custards stick to chocolate, vanilla and the flavor of the day, including strawberry, butter pecan, raspberry, maple nut and cinnamon. The vanilla is good in a sundae. Thick, rich and so light on the vanilla you can taste the cream--a richly neutral base for your favorite toppings--the hot fudge is ideal with salted pecans. Extra-thick malts are a favorite, handmade and dense enough to hold a spoon upright. Lime ice cream sodas are loaded with vanilla custard, intensifying the lime flavor. Leon's hot dogs, chili dogs and Spanish hamburger--sloppy Joe to everyone else--are just close enough to real food to make Leon's a nice lunch stop.
Best Ever. I live in Chicago, and every few weeks i drive up to milwaukee just to get some Leon's Frozen Custard.. Its the best around and driving that 90+ miles is sure worth it!!! just today i "converted" four of my friends.. they cant wait to go up there again.
Jewel of the South Side. Having grown up just a mile or so away from Leon's, this place is quite dear to my heart. Only on the South Side is there a line for frozen custard when it's 30 below zero. But who could resist the creamiest, tastiest custard in town? Butter Pec, Vanilla, and Cinnemon are their best flavors. Also, the Spanish Burgers and Turtle Sundays are outstanding. Try the Lime Soda float for a real treat. Mmm... do I have a craving now or what!
Pure Magic!!. This is a wonderful place to get fabulous frozen custard. The hot dogs are really great too. It was always a real treat to go to Leon's on a hot summer night and get a hot dog and frozen custard. The atmosphere made you feel like you were back in the 50's at a drive-in. I highly recommed Leon's.
It's a da best!. I think Leons frozen custard is by far the best in the state of Wiscosin. Lou Conti
Nectar of the Gods. While we no longer are within easy driving distance of Leon's, we make it a point to visit there every time we are near Milwaukee, and if we know of anyone who can do so, we have them bring back some of their Custard. It is simply unique in its rich flavor, creamy texture and fantastic flavor. Our favorite, Butter Pecan, is simply "Nectar of the Gods." It's "only" a drive in, but it is THE drive in.
An event in itself. Every trip to Milwaukee earns at least one stop for the Hot Fudge Super Leon's with Pecans
A CUSTARD CLASSIC!. The best custard in the city! Even the President visits there when he comes. No one can out do Leon's.
